Molokai to Oahu...2007 Women and Mens Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe Race. Na Wahine O Ke Kai and the Molokai Hoe. The Molokai Hoe is a 41-mile open ocean race that launches from Hale O Lono Harbor on Molokai and ends at Duke Kahanamoku Beach in Waikiki, Oahu. Crews from all over the world Tahiti, Japan, Singapore, Italy, Australia, California and Hawaii compete for the title. This year marks the 55th crossing of the Ka 'iwi Channel, which separates the islands of Oahu and Molokai. The Ka 'iwi Channel has been touted, at times, as one of the most treacherous spans of ocean in the world.
Exploding tubes...over shallow lava reef and sand. For decades, Pipe has been considered the most dangerous wave on the planet and shows no sign of slowing down. However, great risk yields great reward, and it’s not uncommon to hear the phrase “best wave of my life” thrown around in the lineup and on the beach. Pipeline is held (by many) with as much reverence as the ASP World Title itself. The history of the place, combined with the sheer ferocity of the wave, makes winning the Pipemasters a career highlight.
The Race Began...in 1973. During its formative period (1973-1978) the Honolulu Marathon doubled in size every year—a rate that has been equaled only once. That growth, like the growth of long-distance running itself, came about not from an interest in competition, but from a quest for personal longevity. Starting near Ala Moana Beach Park, the course progresses west along the waterfront toward downtown Honolulu, then loops through downtown and bends back east through Waikiki, around Diamond Head, and out toward the eastern suburbs of Honolulu, winding through Hawaii Kai before doubling back toward the finish line at Waikiki's Kapiolani Park.
The Merrie Monarch...festival was founded in 1964 by George Na. The festival is dedicated to the memory of King David Kalakaua, known as the Merrie Monarch. King Kalakaua, the second (and last) elected king of Hawaii, came to the throne in 1874 and reigned until his death in 1891. He was a patron of the arts, especially music and dance. With the exception of 2008, the festival week always starts on Easter Sunday and continues with craft fairs, entertainment, and cultural demonstrations during the week. The festivities culminate in the annual competitions held at the Edith Kanakaʻole Multipurpose Stadium.
PGA Tour...golfer Parker McLachlin talks about growing up in Hawaii, his first hole-in-one, and what makes the golf courses in Hawaii so unique. The Kohala Coast provides the passionate golf player with a huge variety of golf courses on the Big Island of Hawaii, from popular public courses to spectacular championship layouts.
Watch As...national geographic photographer and Whale Trust co-founder Flip Nicklin reveals the mysteries of Hawaii's humpback whales. Then go on an amazing whale watching tour in the channel between Maui, Lanai and Molokai, one of the best places in the world to spot whales. The humpback whale almost came to extinction in 1966 after mass commercial whaling during the early 20th century. Today there are approximately 30,000 to 40,000 humpbacks worldwide. Federal laws protect them, but there are things we can all do to help preserve this amazing animal for future whale watching generation. Keep beaches and waters clean and debris-free. Support efforts to stop illegal whaling. Support legislation, research and preservation programs.
Located On The...island of Maui watch an amazing sunrise above the clouds from atop Haleakala Visitor Center, nearly 10,000 feet above sea level. From the summit one looks down into a massive depression some 7 miles across, 2 miles wide, and nearly 2,600 ft. deep. The surrounding walls are steep and the interior mostly barren-looking with a scattering of volcanic cones. The volcano is officially considered active and has produced numerous eruptions in the last 30,000 years.
